Hi, I'm Shaun Mwangi. I build the websites Lumen delivers.

I'm a web developer based in Kenya, and Lumen is the studio I run to build websites and web apps for businesses, creators and startups. When you message us on WhatsApp, you're talking to the person who will write your code.

Where I come from

I studied at Strathmore University and at Moringa School. I've been building websites and apps for 4 years, and working professionally since 2023. Those first couple of years taught me the most important thing about this job: the technology is rarely what makes a project succeed or stall. Clear scope, honest conversation and finishing what you start matter far more.

Along the way I've built an influencer marketing platform, a marketplace for government construction bids, an equipment finance marketplace and a website for a gym with eight floors to explain. Different industries, same lesson: people leave a site the moment it stops making sense. You can read what each one involved on the work page.

Why "Lumen"?

A lumen is a unit of light. When someone searches for what you do, your business should be easy to see. That's the whole job, and it's the reason I care as much about speed and search as I do about how a page looks.

How I work

Phone first. Most people in Kenya and across Africa will open your site on a phone, often on mobile data. I design that screen first and keep pages light, then scale up to laptops.

Plain pricing. Every package on the pricing page has a number next to it. For bigger projects like a startup MVP, I'd rather spend an hour scoping with you than hand you a vague quote.

Say it straight. If something you ask for is a bad idea, I'll tell you and suggest something better. If a deadline is unrealistic, you'll hear it from me early, not the day before.

Launch, then improve. A site that's live and being used teaches you more in a week than a month of tweaking in private. We launch when it's solid, then keep improving it from what real visitors do.

Where I work

I'm based in Kenya and work with clients across Africa and further afield. Everything happens online, mostly over WhatsApp, with a call whenever it's quicker to talk.
